About

First published 1881 - romance and reality of antipodean life in the infancy of a new colony. Tells of Maori life, the life of Pakeha Maori traders, and the very early settlement of Auckland.

The author, who later became Mayor of Auckland, came to the Hauraki Gulf in 1840. There he lived with pakeha Maoris and began his acquaintance with the Maori people. He explored the site of Auckland and the shores of the Manukau and Waitemata harbours and, realising that the area must become an important town in the future, moved to Browns Island (Motu Korea).

Illustrated with monochrome images and maps. Includes various newspaper cuttings.
