About

History of "The North" or "The Far North" were names applied to the territory of New Zealand lying north of Auckland.

It was the area where the first European settlements were established and was soon noted for its production of timber from the Kauri tree, which became an important export commodity. The Kauri also had a by-product, Kauri gum, and while this material was first exported to Sydney in the early 1800s, it was the mid-century before regular shipments were being sent to overseas markets, where it was used for industrial purposes, notably in paints and varnishes. By the late 1800s the gum had become NZ's second most valuable export.

Illustrated throughout with monochrome and colour images. Map inside rear cover.
