In the study, the first to be devoted to leisure time activities in early colonial life, the author shows, selectively, the significance of particular forms of recreation for this emerging society. The sexual imbalance had a deep and enduring effects of recreation in early Australia. In this essentially male society with mostly male recreations, what place did women have? David Collins puts the view that "the chastity of the female part of the settlement was never so rigid" that the ultimate rigour of the law need be enforced against sexual offenders.
