Isaac Coates was one of the first mayors of Hamilton.

This is the story of a strong-minded Yorkshireman who came to New Zealand in the eighteen-sixties. He had been brought up on a farm in England and he farmed most of his New Zealand years. But he was also a railway contractor, a brickmaker, a storekeeper, and a flax-miller as well, mainly because farming didn't pay. Among his last activities was prospecting for oil. On Record is Isaac Coates's own story set down when he was over seventy; but it is also the story of the town and district in which he lived.
