A description of Power's life in New Zealand from July 1846 to June 1848. Power's sketches recall his experiences and observations as a young British soldier posted to NZ. He records his impressions of the early British settlers, the Maori people, the environment, some of the campaigns he was involved in during his posting, land deals and political issues. Some fascinating insights into conditions, expectations and difficulties in the new colony. Much of his account is located in the Wanganui area.
Includes 10 monochrome fine line illustrations, including frontispiece.
