1st Edition. This is a very readable, but quite scarce, memoir of a British soldier in the second world war.
It has been written as a story with a third person narrative, but, as the blurb on the rear cover says, the tale recounts the experiences and emotions of the author.
Conscripted into the army in October 1941, the story follows the war service of the author portrayed in the book as "Fred Stilton". Training in England followed by deployment to the campaign in North Africa and then into Sicily and Italy: then part of the British army moving into France, Belgium, Germany and Denmark after the D-Day landings. The tale ends with demob and the issue of civilian clothes in January 1947. It gives us vivid first-hand accounts of the horrors and comradeship of war. Well worth the read.
