About

Traces the remarkable history of the Save Manapouri Campaign, a cause which galvanised New Zealanders from one end of the country to another.

It also traces the subsequent, ongoing efforts of the Lake Guardians and their work at safeguarding the natural values of magnificent Lakes Manapouri and Te Anau. 'Save Manapouri!' was the catch cry that rallied public opinion as never before.

A petition delivered to Parliament in 1970 which opposed the raising of the lakes contained some 265,000 signatures -- a record for the time. The campaign to save the lakes from being raised for the sake of a relatively small increase in hydro-electric generation, took on politicians and senior bureaucrats and won.

Includes monochrome and colour images, diagrams, maps.
