Eleanor Honnywill (later Eleanor, Lady Fuchs), who was a key figure in the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

Honnywill has written in vivid detail of the early voyages of Captain Cook, de Gerlache and Ross, as well as Scott's and Shackleton's legendary exploits and the more recent achievements of Byrd, Mawson, and Sir Vivian Fuchs.

There are chapters on modern methods of living and working in the Antarctic, and of the vast amount of scientific research. Sections include Australasian and American exploration, and the international cooperation taken place since the International Geophysical Year.
